Transfer and UCEAP Students

International Student Orientation

Our International Student Orientation is MANDATORY for all students in F-1 and J-1 status. You must attend the full orientation (do not arrive late or leave early). If you have a different visa (E, H, L, etc.) you are encouraged, but not required, to attend.

You will learn about:

  • UCR services and student organizations
  • Maintaining your immigration status
  • Health and safety procedures
  • General class registration procedures
  • Intercultural adjustment
  • Your fellow international students and our international peer advisors (IPAs)




Document Check-in is MANDATORY for all international students.

If you have a J-1 visa:
To check in your documents, you will need to bring originals of the following:

  • A completed International Student Personal Record Form
  • Your passport picture page with validity dates
  • Your J-1 visa stamp
  • Your DS-2019
  • Your I-94 print-out (AFTER you enter the United States, you must visit the DHS CBP I-94 website to print out your I-94).
  • Your passport page stamp that shows your most recent date of entry into the United States
  • Your local contact information and emergency contact information (One emergency contact should be a family member or legal guardian)
  • If you have a J-2 dependent, you will also need to bring copies of their pertinent information (DS-2019, passport, J-2 visa and I-94 card print-out) and a completed dependent record form.)


If you have an F-1 visa:
To check in your documents, you will need to bring originals of the following:

     Required: The International Student Personal Record Form.
     Required: I-94 arrival record (Your I-94 arrival record may be found here, please do not print it out until AFTER your arrival.)
     Required: Entry visa stamp.
     Required: Passport.
     Required: Page 1 & 3 of UCR I-20/DS-2019.*
     Required: Page 1 & 3 of any previous I-20s/DS-2019s.* (if you’ve transferred your record in active status)
     If applicable: Copy of I-797 approval notice for change of status in the U.S.

AWPE and MAE: The Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) and Mathematical Analytical Exam (MAE) are placement exams for incoming students. These exams are NOT mandatory, and you are advised to speak with your academic advisor if you have questions about whether or not you should take them. Dates of these tests are below.
