Information Sheet on New SEVIS Fee for F-1 and J-1 Students
Who pays the SEVIS fee? F-1 and J-1 visa holders entering the U.S. with an initial I-20 or DS-2019 dated on or after September 1, 2004 (degree change do not have to pay fee if continuing at the same institution in the U.S., students with transfer pending I-20 Forms do not have to pay).
How much is the fee?
For F-1 and J-1: $100.
For F-2 and J-2: None.
When do prospective students pay the SEVIS fee?
Before going to the U.S. embassy or consulate for their visa interview;
Before appearing at the Port of Entry if you do not need a visa for citizens of Canada, Bermuda, Bahamas, etc; or
Before filing their change of status application while in the U.S.
How is the fee paid?
Online at www.FMJfee.com: use a credit card and complete Form I-901 (recommended method); or
Through Western Union in local currency. For instructions, please visit: http://www.ice.gov/graphics/sevis/i901/wu_instr.htm
Please Note: You cannot pay at the Port of Entry.
When must the fee be paid?
At least three business days prior to the visa interview date for electronic and Western Union submissions (We recommend paying as early as possible).
How will the payment be verified?
An electronic receipt will be printable upon completion of an online payment; or
Western Union will provide a receipt upon completion of payment.
Please keep a copy of your proof of payment as you may be asked to show it at the Port of Entry.
When must continuing students pay the SEVIS fee?
When filing an application for reinstatement when they have been out of status for more than 5 months;
When applying for a new visa or returning to the U.S. after an absence of more than 5 months that did not involve authorized overseas study (in this case, you will need a new initial I-20); or
When filing an application for a change of status to an F-1 or J-1 classification.
