F-2 Dependents & J-2 Dependents

F-2 Dependents

Separate Entry of Dependents

If you would like to bring your immediate family members (children and spouses),  to the United States as F-2 dependents, you must complete our Request for Form I-20 (Grad, Undergrad) and submit it with the required supporting documents. The Request for Form I-20 can be obtained in the Forms section of this website.    Upon completion of all documentation, your dependent(s) must be entered into the SEVIS system and a SEVIS generated I-20 Form must be issued on their behalf.  They will then use this I-20 Form to apply for a visa at the United States Embassy/Consulate in their home country.  Forms and specific guidance can be obtained through our office by calling 951- 827-4113.

Reporting Dependent Arrivals and Change of Residential Address

You are required to report your dependent(s) arrival in the United States and local residential address to our office.  Regulations require us to record and update this information in SEVIS.  Therefore, please complete a Student Dependent Form immediately upon dependant arrival and attach copies or your dependents I-20, I-94 card, visa and passport.  You can obtain this form from the IEC or in the Forms Section of this website.  After completing the Dependent Form, call 951-827-4113 and schedule an appointment to meet with the International Student Advisor.

In order to enhance your family’s experience in Riverside, we have designed many activities specifically for the spouse and children of our non-immigrant students and scholars.  Accurate dependent information allows us to keep them informed of activities and programs.  In past years, we have provided trips to various museums and art galleries, as well as whale watching adventures and weekly programs, designed to enhance interactions in English.  Please see the International Student Families Section on this website for more information.

Employment Authorization For Dependents (Can my J-2 dependent work?)

Dependents of J-1 (Exchange Visitor) visa holders may be granted employment permission by the Unites States Citizenship and Immigration Services (UCIS) when the earnings of the employment will be used for the support of the dependent spouse and children - not for the support of the principal Exchange Visitor.  There is a special application procedure to request employment permission.  The staff of International Education Center will assist you with the application.
